We write about material culture
slowly.
Field Notes is an independent magazine about material culture, living craft and responsible documentation, published in this preview at briskflora.com. We exist for readers who treat the life of an object as a material, social and historical subject — not simply as a consumer trend.
Every guide follows the same method: named sources, context for the evidence, a clear account of what it changes for readers and makers, and analysis that leaves room for uncertainty. We do not sell products. Advertising or sponsored material may support the publication, but it is clearly identified and does not direct editorial decisions. Our purpose is to make the work, care and cultural context behind an object easier to understand.
The journal ranges from the long histories carried by fibre, clay, wood, paper and stone to the contemporary choices that shape their care, repair and transmission. Each entry is treated as a complete subject, with its own pace and source trail.
What we cover
Our belief
Good craft writing does not tell readers what to think. It gives them a vocabulary for what they have noticed and a responsible way to test it against sources. We would rather a visit leave someone more curious than more certain.
